Since moving to New York City in 2012, Ari Livne has worked with students in nearly all middle and high school subjects. Whether his students are struggling in a class or in need of significant improvement on a standardized test, Ari carefully tailors his approach to their specific needs and goals. Although helping students boost their performance is the top priority, Ari is also fiercely committed to cultivating academic independence through deliberate attention to organizational skills, study habits, and mindfulness techniques. He has worked with students at many of New York’s most prestigious schools such as Fieldston, Bronx Science, Stuyvesant, Collegiate, Dalton, Brearley, Chapin, Poly Prep, and UNIS.
A cum laude graduate of Yale University, Ari spent his college years as a tutor for Yale’s Science and Quantitative Reasoning Center, helping his peers succeed in courses such as Differential Equations, Physics, Biology, Biochemistry, General Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry. He then shifted his focus to middle and high school subjects, and spent the ensuing years guiding students through the majority of the K-12 math and science curriculum as well as many standardized tests, including the SAT, ACT, GRE, SSAT, ISEE, SHSAT, AP and SAT Biology, SAT Math 1 & 2, AP Calculus AB and BC, AP and SAT Chemistry. In addition to private tutoring, he has also taught SAT prep classes and developed his own curricula for homeschooled students in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Biology.
Ari is also an accomplished classical pianist. He received a master’s degree from Juilliard and is currently working towards a doctorate in music at CUNY Graduate Center. He has recently begun teaching music theory at Hunter College as a part of his doctoral fellowship. Ari brings this broad perspective to his tutoring, particularly in the realm of skill development and problem solving. One of Ari’s strengths as a tutor is diagnosing the core habits or misunderstandings that are limiting a student’s performance, and finding or producing the precise resources, explanations, and exercises that that student requires.

Artem “Tioma” Maloratsky has over 25 years of experience teaching, tutoring, and mentoring. He has worked extensively with both gifted students and those with learning challenges. His success with a wide range of ages and abilities is based on much more than fluency in the academic subjects.
Tioma offers private tutoring in mathematics and physics, with optional integration of mindfulness for improved academic focus and self-regulation. He also offers preparation for standardized tests such as SAT, ACT, AP Calculus, AP Physics, GRE, ISEE, SHSAT, or SAT Math and Physics subject tests. He has worked with students from top New York schools such as Stuyvesant, Collegiate, Dalton, Trinity, Buckley, Browning, Trevor Day, York Prep, Friends, Riverdale.
The core aspect of Tioma’s approach is a high sensitivity to learning style and temperament of each student, an ability to continually adjust so as to create the experience of “flow” – an engaging and enjoyable learning experience – while seamlessly ushering in new skills. Over the years, Tioma has honed his ability to combine the remediation in fundamental skills with the necessary forward momentum in students’ present coursework. When appropriate, he is able to quickly create sets of custom-tailored practice exercises which help a student solidify skills on a given topic.
Highly individualized instruction has been of central interest to Tioma since he began working with the Experimental Study Group at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, teaching physics courses to small groups of MIT freshmen. After receiving a B.S. degree in Physics from MIT, he completed the joint MIT-Wellesley education program and taught high school mathematics and physics at Boston Latin Academy and at Coral Springs High School. After moving to NYC, Tioma returned to small group and one-on-one instruction, both independently and as part of Individual U – a unique organization that crafts highly individualized programs for children, teenagers, and young adults to boost academic performance and develop executive function skills.
Early on, Tioma recognized the value of the emerging field of mindfulness in education for increasing students’ attention and self-regulation. He became certified as an instructor by Mindful Schools, Inc., and integrated a mindfulness program into the curriculum of Individual U. While continuing his work with Individual U, Tioma joined Peak Year, Inc., which helps teenagers and young adults build skills crucial for a successful college experience. He has also been involved with the Executive Function Center of New York, which focuses more directly on the development of executive function skills based on the definitive work of Adele Diamond. At these two organizations, Tioma has continued his work of combining academic instruction with mindfulness practices.
Tioma is a lifelong learner with a keen interest in developing both sides of the brain. He has been an adult student of the arts, which has given him a unique perspective on the deeper principles of learning and a highly intuitive approach to teaching. He is fluent in English, Russian, and Spanish.

Jon Kopita has been a New York City-based tutor, educational consultant, college applications adviser, and coach for the past 30 years, working with students, parents, and young adults in the New York metropolitan area, New England, the Bahamas, Korea, and Europe. His students have attended both private and public schools and also various New England boarding schools.
Born in Ohio, Jon grew up around the country, attending three grade schools and three high schools due to his father’s work. He graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry and a concentration in Physics. His first job out of college was a sales position with a large chemical company, but he soon left the corporate world for a life of teaching in New York City, his home since 1989.
Jon’s approach to teaching has always been holistic, focusing on a student’s entire learning profile while tailoring lessons to individual needs and learning styles and often working with students over multiple years to address multiple facets of their education. He has taught all levels of middle school and high school math, chemistry, and physics. His greatest passion is to inspire his students by making these subjects understandable and relatable to their lives, always trying to satisfy the question “why do I need to learn this particular thing?” In addition to tending to his students, he understands and appreciates the need to balance parental expectations and to keep parents connected with their children's progress as an integral part of their learning team.
To foster wider community outreach, Jon established a scholarship fund in the early 90’s at Cornell University Summer College. Its goal has been to identify economically disadvantaged high school students who have excelled within their New York City high schools and to give these kids the opportunity to study at Cornell during the summer for either three weeks or six weeks, all with the hope of creating better college awareness and broader opportunities for college admissions. Funds are raised through a combination of donations from Jon’s business and solicitation of corporations and private families.
Jon loves the flexibility that teaching, advising, and coaching has brought over the years. He has traveled to 66 countries and hopes to reach 100. Two of his favorite places have been Laos and Namibia. If Jon finds an obscure place in the world, it means he has to go there. While not teaching and traveling, he tends to his property and house in NW Connecticut and produces art that he hopes to show publicly in the near future. He resides in Greenwich Village.
